Bruno Guimarães' stoppage time penalty looked to have secured a point for the hosts in the dying moments of a remarkable contest, in which United had fought back to level three times.

But Eddie Howe's men kept going right to the death, with Barnes spinning in the box to fire home his second of the night and send St. James' into raptures as the Magpies made it three wins in a row to move up to sixth in the Premier League table.

Earlier, winger Barnes had cancelled out Brenden Aaronson's opener to make it 1-1, but a Malick Thiaw handball in the box allowed Dominic Calvert-Lewin to send the visitors into the break with a slender advantage from the spot.

Joelinton's second half header restored parity once again but the game took another turn just over ten minutes from time as Aaronson slotted home his second to make it 3-2.

After Aaronson was penalised for handball in his own box at the death, Guimarães stepped up to convert - but there was still time for Barnes to muster a sensational winner to give the Magpies all three points on a breathless, memorable night under the lights on Tyneside.

The visitors started brightly, and it took a timely Joelinton intervention to prevent James Justin from connecting with the impressive Aaronson's cross at the back post. Defender Pascal Struijk went close in the opening ten minutes too, glancing a free kick over the bar from ten yards out.

But the Magpies had the ball in the net soon after when goalkeeper Lucas Perri dropped a Thiaw header at the feet of Fabian Schär, who applied the finish. Referee Salisbury, though, ruled the goal out for an alleged infringement by the Swiss defender, who didn't appear to make a great deal of contact with the Leeds stopper.

Anton Stach then forced a save from Nick Pope midway through the half after Ilia Gruev robbed Bruno Guimarães 30 yards out, while Lewis Miley glanced a corner over after Sandro Tonali's deflected shot as the contest remained open.

After Stach blazed over, Barnes' low drive across goal brought a one-handed stop from Perri, but American international Aaronson's opportunistic yet well-taken low strike - which came following a mistake from Thiaw - gave his side the lead 15 minutes before the break.

It was swiftly cancelled out by Barnes' left-footed equaliser, though, which followed some good work from Anthony Gordon and Nick Woltemade who had combined to create space for the former Leicester winger twelve yards from goal.

An inswinging free kick from Gordon then evaded everybody in the box and struck the upright and the Magpies looked to seize control, but Calvert-Lewin's spot-kick - awarded after Thiaw stopped Jaka Bijol's cross from finding the frontman with his arm - left Howe's charges with work to do in the second half.

Howe sent on Tino Livramento and Sven Botman in place of Thiaw and Tonali at the break, but Leeds again began on the front foot, with Stach leading a breakaway that led to Pope saving Aaronson's low shot with his feet.

But nine minutes after the restart, Guimarães' outside-of-the-boot cross found compatriot Joelinton, whose glancing header was perfectly placed just inside Perri's right-hand post to make it 2-2.

Some terrific defending from Schär stopped Calvert-Lewin from finishing off a Stach cross on the hour, just seconds before a similarly vital interception from Justin prevented Gordon from netting at the other end. Leeds skipper Ethan Ampadu then slid in to cut out a Barnes centre that looked destined to be turned home by Lewis Hall at the far post.

The resulting corner caused even more chaos in the visitors box as this restless encounter kept flowing at pace. Guimarães swung it in and after Miley and Joelinton both had a stab at it, Schär hit the post with a shot on the turn and Joelinton then couldn't beat Perri as he instinctively met the rebound.

With a quarter of the contest remaining, it was Leeds' turn to hit the woodwork. Gabriel Gudmundsson beat Livramento and Pope misjudged his deep cross, which Justin met at the back post. The one-time England international's header came back off the bar, with Calvert-Lewin just unable to turn the loose ball into an empty net.

The Magpies lost Schär to injury with 15 minutes remaining and head coach Howe sent on Yoane Wissa and Jacob Ramsey in the hope of finding a winner, but three minutes later they fell behind again. An untimely slip from Ramsey gave Gruev time to find Aaronson on the right, and his shot clipped the post on its way in to leave United chasing a third leveller.

In the final minute of the 90, it was Aaronson, in the thick of the action all evening, who inadvertently allowed United the chance to equalise once more. He blocked Hall's cross with his arm, giving Guimarães the chance to equalise from the spot - and it was an opportunity the Newcastle skipper did not waste, as he calmly stroked home, sending Perri the wrong way.

And somehow, they found the energy to go back for more. Barnes' winner, struck on the turn in the 12th minute of added time, crept inside the upright at the Leazes End, sparking bedlam in the stands - and sealing a vital three points for United from a game that will live long in the memory of those in black and white.
