Newcastle United are in advanced talks to sign Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez, with a club-to-club agreement close, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

The Magpies have waved goodbye to captain Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali, with the pair departing to join Premier League rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, respectively.

Despite bringing Aladji Bamba and Sean Steur into the engine room, new manager Mathias Jaissle wants further reinforcements and has set his sights on an established Premier League star.

Gonzalez has emerged on the radar at the Tyneside club, with a move to prise him away to St James’ Park now appearing increasingly close.

It is suggested that Manchester City and Newcastle United are nearing a club-to-club agreement for the 24-year-old’s signature.

The deal is believed to be worth around £50m, although talks with the Spanish midfielder’s representatives have yet to take place and are expected to follow shortly.

The 24-year-old has been with Manchester City since February last year, when he joined from FC Porto in a deadline-day deal.

He has since made 59 appearances for the club, including 41 last season as he helped the Sky Blues secure the FA Cup and EFL Cup.

New boss Enzo Maresca wants to add another midfielder to his ranks after Ayyoub Bouaddi, with Chelsea star Enzo Fernandez his leading target, but for that move to take shape, Gonzalez must first be moved on.

The 24-year-old was previously linked with the Magpies two seasons ago, although a move failed to materialise before he eventually joined Manchester City.

It remains to be seen how quickly a deal can be finalised and whether Gonzalez could feature in the matchday squad when Newcastle welcome West Brom for their midweek EFL Cup fixture.

Newcastle will want to make sure the player is fully on board with the move, having suffered disappointments this summer on several targets, despite being prepared to pay their asking price.

The Magpies are fresh from a draw against Liverpool at home on Sunday, with a late penalty allowing the Reds to snatch a point, and will be looking to put that disappointment behind them when they face Championship side West Brom on Wednesday in the EFL Cup.
