Newcastle United have agreed a £52m package with Manchester City for Nico Gonzalez, accelerating Matthias Jaissle’s midfield rebuild after high-profile departures. The Spaniard is set to become the latest addition to the Magpies’ squad.

Newcastle will pay £48m upfront plus £4m in add-ons for the 24-year-old, who has been cleared to travel to the North East for a medical. David Ornstein of The Athletic reports a verbal agreement was struck at the weekend after the player approved the St James' Park project.

The pursuit follows a difficult spell in which Newcastle missed out on several alternatives. Moves for Marseille’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Bayern Munich’s Joao Palhinha did not progress to an advanced stage.

By switching to Gonzalez, the club have targeted a younger profile who can grow with the squad while offering immediate top-level experience.

Urgency has been driven by a summer that removed two pillars of the side. Bruno Guimaraes was sold to Arsenal and Sandro Tonali joined Tottenham, with their absence evident in the recent 2-2 draw with Liverpool.

For Gonzalez, the move offers a reset after a stalling spell at the Etihad. The Spain Under-21 international joined City from Porto for £52m on 2025 January deadline day.

He was an unused substitute in City’s win over Bournemouth and played 11 minutes in the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal. Lack of regular action pushed him towards a role central to Jaissle’s system.

Jaissle still wants attacking reinforcements, including a creative number 10. Christopher Nkunku had been identified for a loan, but he returned to RB Leipzig from AC Milan instead of heading to Tyneside.

Newcastle have made six signings this summer and pivoted towards youth, with only two over the age of 20. The arrivals of Aladji Bamba and Sean Steur underline that shift, while Gonzalez adds balance and Premier League pedigree.
