Newcastle United are interested in signing Marseille midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer, according to French outlet Foot Mercato.

Newcastle want a replacement for Arsenal-bound Bruno Guimaraes, and Magpies sporting director Ross Wilson is looking to bring Hojbjerg to the St James’ Park club.

Toons new manager Matthias Jaissle needs an experienced and quality midfielder following the Brazilian’s exit.

Hojbjerg fits the bill having made 254 Premier League appearances during his time in England.

The former Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur star has played 75 games for Marseille since moving to France, and a return to the Premier League could appeal to him.

The 31-year-old is on the Magpies’ shortlist, but they have other options.

Hojbjerg proved his quality in the Bundesliga with the likes of Bayern Munich, FC Augsburg and Schalke 04 before moving to England.

The Newcastle target’s main strengths include passing and playing through balls despite largely playing as a defensive midfielder.

The Magpies could do with such a player and he is the perfect option to replace Guimaraes given his wealth of experience and quality.

The Dane could be available for around £20 million having joined Marseille for around £17m, and Newcastle could be getting a top player for a decent fee.

Newcastle are also eyeing Real Sociedad midfielder Luka Sucic to replace Guimaraes, with Lukas Nmecha and Angelo Stiller also options.

Jaissle will hope he gets the best players this summer as he looks to hit the ground running in his first Premier League job.
