Aston Villa could face serious competition from Newcastle United in the pursuit of Teun Koopmeiners, with the Magpies preparing to take a ‘more concrete’ approach towards Juventus star.

Matthias Jaissle’s side are seeking midfield reinforcements to help fill the void left by Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes this summer.

The Magpies have already added Aladji Bamba and Sean Steur to their midfield ranks, although both are youthful additions and Newcastle still require greater experience in the engine room.

The Tyneside outfit consequently pursued Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and were even prepared to meet Marseille’s asking price to take the Dane to St James’ Park.

Hojbjerg, however, rejected a potential move to the Magpies, dealing Newcastle a significant blow and forcing them to redirect their search.

Newcastle hold an interest in Bayern Munich star Joao Palhinha, although Aston Villa are also in contention for the Portuguese, along with Benfica.

Both clubs could now align on another midfield target in Koopmeiners, with the Villans already keeping tabs on the Dutchman.

According to Italian journalist Mirko Di Natale, Newcastle could focus their attention on Koopmeiners ‘in a more concrete way’.

Juventus have already been expected to sanction several departures in their bid to generate funds, including the Dutchman, a situation that could potentially work in the Premier League pair’s favour.

Aston Villa can counter Newcastle’s interest with the lure of Champions League football, although whether Koopmeiners would prefer to become part of Jaissle’s rebuilding project at St James’ Park remains uncertain.

With the Magpies having already missed out on several targets, they will need to tread carefully in their pursuit of the Dutchman.

Given the Old Lady’s willingness to do business, however, the situation could quickly move towards a deal if either Premier League club places the right offer on the table.

Although suggestions had been that a deal could only come to fruition in the final stretch of the window, Newcastle’s intention to accelerate proceedings could alter the timeline, leaving the Villans needing to respond accordingly if they are indeed serious about Koopmeiners.
