Newcastle United have reportedly joined the growing list of Premier League clubs monitoring Tyler Morton, with the former Liverpool midfielder’s impressive development at Lyon attracting attention ahead of the January transfer window. The 23-year-old has established himself as an important figure in France since leaving Anfield permanently in 2025.
His performances have now put a Premier League return back on the agenda, although Lyon’s reluctance to lose him midway through the season could complicate any deal.
According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle are one of seven Premier League clubs keeping tabs on Morton, alongside Liverpool, Everton, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace and Brighton.
Morton moved from Liverpool to Lyon for an initial £10million, potentially rising to £15m, while Liverpool retained a 20 per cent sell-on clause.
He has since become a key player for Paulo Fonseca’s side and has attracted scouts with his ability to operate both as a deeper midfielder and in a more conventional central role.
Newcastle’s reported interest comes as manager Matthias Jaissle continues reshaping his midfield following a summer of major changes at St James’ Park.
Morton’s playing time helps explain why so many English clubs are now watching him.
He has featured in all five of Lyon’s Ligue 1 matches so far this season, accumulating 366 league minutes. Across all competitions, he has again been heavily involved after becoming a regular during his first year in France.
The biggest obstacle for Newcastle may be Lyon’s position. Reports indicate the French club are reluctant to sanction a January departure because of Morton’s importance to their team, while his contract runs until 2030, giving them little pressure to sell.
That makes a January deal far from straightforward, especially with Liverpool also continuing to monitor their former academy graduate.
From Newcastle’s perspective, though, Morton fits the profile of a sensible long-term signing. He already understands English football, is approaching his prime years and has developed considerably through regular football in Ligue 1.
Whether Newcastle turn their scouting interest into an actual bid remains uncertain, but Morton’s name looks likely to feature prominently in transfer discussions heading towards January.
