Newcastle United fans found out (see below) on Monday what the plans were when it came to tickets for the derby match at Sunderland.
That game a 2pm kick-off on Wearside, on Sunday 14 December.
Newcastle United fans knowing there would be no repeat of the 6,000 ticket allocation for the 3-0 FA Cup derby win (see photo above) over Sunderland in January 2024.
However, fans of both teams left disappointed to discover that the two clubs had decided to restrict away fans to only 2,528 tickets for the two Premier League derbies this season.
Premier League rules dictating that away fans should get a minimum of 3,000 tickets if the stadium capacity is 30,000+.
For this Sunderland away match, Newcastle United season ticket holders had 24 hours to apply for a derby ticket, with that opportunity to apply closing at 2pm today (Tuesday 11 November).
Now those Newcastle United fans have discovered what the cut-off point was.
Official NUFC ticketing site update on Newcastle United fans success (and failure) in getting derby tickets for the match at Sunderland:
‘Eligible supporters include those who applied with 124+ loyalty points, and those successful from the ballot
Seat selection opens:
Supporters with 200+ loyalty points, Wednesday 12th November, 2pm
Supporters with 124+ loyalty points, Wednesday 12th October, 4pm
Seat selection closes:
Friday 14th November, 2pm’
So Newcastle United fans left disappointed if they had 123 loyalty points or less, unless they were one of the small number who succeed in the ballot. Each away game a ballot is held for those who didn’t have enough loyalty points but only a small percentage of tickets held back for that ballot.
With the clubs cutting the away allocation to only 2,528 tickets, reality is likely to be that after the usual tickets were kept back by the club for ‘others’, only around 2,000 Sunderland tickets would have been available to Newcastle United season ticket holders.
Newcastle United official announcement – 10 November 2025:
The Magpies travel to the Stadium of Light for a first Tyne-Wear derby of the Premier League season on Sunday 14th December – with an away allocation now confirmed.
Newcastle United has been allocated 2,528 away tickets, ahead of the ticket application window opening at 2pm (GMT) on Monday, 10th November. Sunderland will receive the same away allocation for the reverse fixture at St. James’ Park in March, following an agreement between both clubs.
A revised away ticketing process has been introduced for the 2025/26 season as a result of consultation with season ticket holders, which saw over 8,000 fans cast their vote on the away ticket allocation process.
Key dates for Sunderland (A) ticket sales are outlined below:
Phase 1 – Monday 10th November (2pm)
Ticket application opens for all season ticket holders to apply for a ticket for this fixture.
Phase 2 – Tuesday 11th November (2pm)
Ticket application window closes. The club will process all submissions, allocating tickets in loyalty point order. A small number of tickets will also be balloted to those who do not meet the loyalty points threshold.
Phase 3 – Wednesday 12th November (2pm)
Supporters who are successful in the application process will be emailed by 1pm on Wednesday, 12th November, with an opportunity to go online and purchase their ticket(s) for the fixture. Tickets will be sold using a ‘select your own seat’ model, giving fans the flexibility to choose where they sit and who they sit alongside – whether friends or family.
This system removes the need for travel groups as supporters can make seat selections directly during the purchase window.
Phase 4 – Friday 14th November (2pm)
Once the purchase window for successful applicants closes, any remaining tickets that haven’t been purchased will be offered to those who applied for the fixture and fall within the next tier of loyalty points – below the point at which sales were previously fulfilled. For example, a fixture sells out at 10 loyalty points, tickets will then be offered to supporters who applied for tickets with 9 loyalty points.

Tyne-Wear derbies (away allocations)
Newcastle United and Sunderland AFC have agreed to match away support allocations ahead of this season’s Tyne-Wear derbies.
Given the high-profile nature of the match, Newcastle United conducted a detailed safety assessment which concluded that balcony seating should be closed in the away section of the Leazes Stand for the fixture at St. James’ Park in March. This measure, intended to support effective segregation and enhance fan safety, reduces the away allocation from 3,200 to 2,528.
