Newcastle head into their clash with Arsenal in bleak form, with confidence drained and momentum long gone from their Premier League campaign. What once promised to be a competitive season has faded into frustration, leaving Eddie Howe facing mounting scrutiny as results continue to slide.
Despite the gloom, fixtures against Arsenal have recently carried an edge, and that rivalry could yet ignite a response from a squad that looks in need of fresh energy.

Injuries and suspensions continue to shape Newcastle’s selection picture. Anthony Gordon was already absent in the defeat to Bournemouth, while Tino Livramento suffered an injury that now rules him out. As a result, Kieran Trippier is expected to step in, bringing experience to the back line.
Further forward, Harvey Barnes appears set to join William Osula and Anthony Elanga in attack, offering pace and directness against an Arsenal side likely to dominate possession. Bruno Guimaraes, having returned from injury last weekend, is pushing for a start and could be pivotal in midfield alongside Sandro Tonali and Lewis Miley.
The likely starting XI reads: Ramsdale, Trippier, Thiaw, Burn, Hall, Guimaraes, Tonali, Miley, Elanga, Osula, Barnes.
Newcastle’s problems are compounded by a lengthy injury list. Gordon remains sidelined with a hip issue, while Livramento is dealing with a groin problem. Fabian Schar is still recovering from foot surgery, and Emil Krafth is not expected to feature again this season following knee surgery.
Joelinton, meanwhile, is suspended, serving the final game of his two match ban. These absences have left Howe short of options, particularly in key areas of the pitch, and have contributed heavily to the team’s struggles.
The lack of squad depth has been exposed repeatedly, with Newcastle unable to rotate effectively or maintain intensity across matches.
Eddie Howe addressed selection decisions in his pre match press conference, particularly regarding attacking options. Despite significant investment in players such as Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa, both remain on the fringes.
When questioned, Howe emphasised meritocracy, saying: “Like with every player that is not playing, they have to show their worth in training and that’s their shop window for me to pick them.
“How they train, how they commit to the training and how much they are prepared to put individual disappointment to the side for the team to then come back fighting but I believe in both players still, I’ve got no issues with either of them.
“They have unique qualities to offer the team but it’s got to be on merit and deserved. They are both outstanding players and will be better for next season.”
His comments underline a broader issue within the squad, with competition for places failing to translate into consistent performances on the pitch.
Facing Arsenal at this stage presents a daunting challenge for Newcastle. The Magpies are searching for resilience and identity, while Arsenal remain focused on maintaining their push at the top end of the table.
Even so, Newcastle fans are clinging to hope of disrupting their opponents. As one supporter optimistically noted, “Beat Arsenal, beat Fulham I can see Newcastle getting a point here. A good time to play Arsenal.”
Whether that belief translates into performance remains to be seen, but for Newcastle, pride and progress are now the immediate priorities in what has become a difficult campaign.
