The twinning of Pena Deportiva Garrucha with Newcastle United has now been reported in Spain.
This follows on from a lot of positive coverage in the Spanish media the past week or so, due to the rapport between the fans of Newcastle United and Athletic Club of Bilbao.
This ‘twinning’ with Pena Deportiva Garrucha though, is totally unconnected with the Champions League and Basque friendship for Newcastle United and their fans.
Indeed, geographically they couldn’t be further apart.
Whilst Bilbao is a city at the very north of the country on the coast with a population of around 350,000 and part of a conurbation/metropolitan area of around one million people.
Garrucha is a port on the south coast, some 600 miles away from Bilbao by road, a small town with a population of only around 10,000.
Today’s edition of La Voz de Almeria reports on Pena Deportiva Garrucha ‘twinning’ with Newcastle United. The club who wear black and white stripes and who play in the sixth tier of Spanish football, wanting to formalise their friendship with Newcastle United as part of their centenary celebrations.
The Spanish newspaper La Voz de Almeria explaining (as translated by Sport Witness) the twinning of Newcastle United and Pena Deportiva Garrucha:
‘This twinning represents a giant step for the Garrucha club, symbolising the history and roots that connect the organisation with British football. An agreement that, as stated in the press release, is “a symbol of the history, passion, and values we share with the English club.” The twinning between Pena Deportiva Garrucha and
‘Newcastle United F.C. is not simply a club alliance, but a recognition of a deeply rooted historical connection. As the Almería-based club emphasises, it is “a historical bond that strengthens the ties that unite us beyond sport and borders.” It is a well-known fact that the black and white colours worn by P.D. Garrucha are directly inspired by those of Newcastle United F.C. This adoption of the kit is due to the influence of British sailors and technicians.
