Newcastle United welcome Manchester City to St. James’ Park on Saturday evening, desperate to turn their season around.
Eddie Howe’s side have lost their last two Premier League matches. Worryingly, they squandered leads in both defeats against West Ham and Brentford. Consequently, the Magpies now face a monumental task against a City side they have struggled to beat for years.
Indeed, Newcastle could win just one of their last 35 league meetings with the Citizens. Moreover, manager Eddie Howe has never beaten Manchester City in 18 Premier League attempts. This is the longest winless run of any manager against a single opponent in the competition’s history.
Eddie Howe will have to make a defensive reshuffle for the visit of Manchester City, with key centre-back Dan Burn suspended following his red card against Brentford. The manager’s selection headache is compounded by late fitness calls on Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento. Gordon (hip) and Livramento (knee) have both returned to training and are “very close” to a return, but Howe admitted they remain “touch and go” and will require late checks before a decision is made.
On a more positive note, goalkeeper Nick Pope has trained without issue and is available for selection after recovering from the head injury that forced him off against Brentford. However, the game comes too soon for forward Yoane Wissa. The summer signing remains unavailable as he undergoes a “pre-season” style conditioning programme with the sports science team, with no definitive return date set.
Newcastle United predicted XI: Pope; Trippier, Thiaw, Botman, Hall; Tonali, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Murphy, Woltemade, Gordon
