Spurs travel up north in desperate need of a result

Tottenham look to avoid a fourth straight defeat as they travel to face a Newcastle team also struggling this season.

Spurs fell to another home Premier League loss at the weekend as Fulham scored twice inside the opening six minutes to record their first win on the road of the season.

The result evaporated any goodwill created by the valiant 5-3 loss at Paris Saint-Germain as the home crowd made their discontent clear with boos throughout the game, with Guglielmo Vicario targeted in particular after his error leading to the second Fulham goal.

Thomas Frank came out afterwards and said any “true” Spurs fan would not boo a player, but the Spurs boss faces a tough task in changing the mood on Tuesday evening.

Newcastle vs Tottenham team news

Newcastle are sweating over three star names, with first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope still a doubt after missing the win at Everton with a knock.

Sven Botman, who is struggling with an issue in his lower back, is set to see a specialist, so a return from injury remains unclear, while summer signing Yoane Wissa is back in training but unlikely to feature.

Tottenham came through the Fulham defeat unscathed, but it remains to be seen how Thomas Frank sets up. Newcastle are relatively toothless against low blocks, but another defensive display will not be accepted.

Rodrigo Bentancur replaced Joao Palhinha on Saturday, and Frank may be tempted to play the pair together again as a much-maligned midfield duo. Djed Spence will be pushing to start, while captain Cristian Romero is available again after returning from suspension.

Randal Kolo Muani was against the brightest spark for Spurs so he should keep his place in attack. Xavi Simons has been forced to settle for a substitute role of late, but could be thrown in from the start, though Lucas Bergvall did enough against Fulham to keep his place.

Newcastle vs Tottenham prediction

Newcastle are, somehow, below Spurs in the Premier League table heading into this game, despite a thumping win at Everton over the weekend, underlining how their poor start has somewhat gone under the radar. It was their first away win of the season, and brings the momentum into the game.

Spurs, meanwhile, could not be more deflated, with the Spurs manager and player Pedro Porro publicly decrying the toxic atmosphere in N17. Will an away game, therefore, came at the right time? Spurs have four of their six away league games this season, so know how to get the job done.

Newcastle, though, have proven that they have Spurs’ number of late, and an early goal - just like in the Carabao Cup meeting between the two sides in October - will likely have a huge say on proceedings.

Newcastle to win, 2-0.
