Celta Vigo head coach Rafael Benítez is close to sealing a reunion with a former member of his defensive setup at Premier League outfit Newcastle United.
That’s according to The Athletic, who have this evening provided an insight into the January transfer efforts of those at the Estadio de Balaídos.
Celta, it is understood, have set their sights firmly on the signing of out-of-favour Newcastle man Javier Manquillo.
Full-back Manquillo, for his part, has not managed a single minute of senior football to this point in the campaign, owing to a string of injury concerns, and intense competition for places.
The aforementioned Benítez, who brought the 29-year-old to Tyneside during his own stint in the Newcastle dugout, is therefore keen on bringing Manquillo back to Spain this month.
The versatile stopper’s current terms at St. James’ Park are due to expire in the summer, with Celta hopeful of clinching a free transfer before the winter window slams shut.
Discussions have in turn been kicked into gear between the respective parties, with The Athletic pointing towards an agreement being ‘close’.
