Newell's sack Orsi and Gómez after heavy Banfield defeat | OneFootball

Newell's Old Boys have dismissed coaching duo Favio Orsi and Sergio Gómez after a bruising defeat away to Banfield this weekend.

The setback at the Florencio Sola ended a short reign that never clicked. The club said in a statement that the pair had left after the press conference was cancelled and players departed without speaking.

Orsi and Gómez arrived in Rosario in December, fresh from being crowned champions with Platense in mid-2025, but they struggled to impose an identity.

They leave winless in 2026, with two draws and four defeats from the opening fixtures. The team showed little response despite more than a dozen signings in the last window.

The timing comes with the Liga Profesional calendar in mind, as Newell's host Rosario Central at the Coloso Marcelo Bielsa on 1 March. The board have acted to lift the mood and start taking three points, aiming to climb off the bottom and ease relegation fears.
