Eugen Polanski says Borussia Monchengladbach’s decision to let Nico Elvedi join Leeds United reflects finances and the defender’s wish to leave. Elvedi is in the UK and due to undergo a medical, with confirmation expected within the next day or so.
He said: “He’s a real rock for us, so this is a big loss.” Speaking to Bild, he added: “On the other hand, it’s a question of finances, and there’s Nico’s wish to leave, having given so much to this club over 11 years. Therefore, we can’t and don’t want to stand in his way.”
Leeds are thought to be paying around £8 million for the 29-year-old.
Gladbach signed him from FC Zürich for around £3 million 11 years ago, and he has a year left on his deal. He has made 364 appearances, including 15 in the Champions League.
Leeds moved for Elvedi as Sebastiaan Bornauw’s switch to Hamburg nears completion. An outline agreement is in place, with a replacement sought before the Belgian departs.
Elvedi has 73 Switzerland caps and played in every World Cup game this summer as they reached the quarter-finals. Right footed, he has featured in both a back three and a back four. His arrival will be Leeds’ fourth of the summer after Harry Wilson, Tarik Muharemovic and James Trafford.
