Neymar was mistakenly substituted while receiving treatment on the touchline during Santos' 0-3 defeat to Coritiba in Brazil.
According to Le Progres, the fourth official inadvertently signalled his number while he was off the pitch receiving treatment. The outlet also notes Brazilian media insist he will be on the trip to the World Cup.
The Santos forward had a calf problem and called for the medics. As Robinho Jr. prepared to come on, the official announced Neymar’s withdrawal, not the player the coach had intended.
With Robinho Jr. introduced, Neymar was left stranded on the sideline by an administrative error. The former PSG striker protested, grabbing the substitution slip and holding it up to the cameras. He was not allowed back on, with his team three goals down.
Earlier, he had been in tears when the Brazilian anthem played before kick-off.
Brazil’s record goalscorer wants to play a fourth World Cup but has yet to receive a call-up from Carlo Ancelotti. The Selecao head coach is due to name his squad on Monday at 22:00 French time.
