An eight-year-old Corinthians fan was abused in the stands after receiving Neymar's shirt following Santos' 1-0 win, then left the Neo Quimica Arena under police escort.

As reported by L'Équipe, the boy had asked for the shirt after full time on Sunday. He and his family were led out via the tunnel towards the dressing rooms.

Home supporters reacted angrily that the child, who admires the Brazilian star, had sought an opponent's shirt in the immediate aftermath of a home defeat.

In a statement on Monday, Memphis Depay's club said there are limits that must not be crossed on and off the pitch, and that hostility towards a child falls beyond those limits.

Neymar also criticised the behaviour, telling reporters there is nothing wrong with a young boy liking a player from another team and that a child should not be treated like that.
