Neymar has taken another step in his recovery from left knee meniscus surgery and is edging closer to playing again for Santos. According to Globo.com, he began physical transition work on Monday at CT Rei Pelé, the final phase before resuming ball work with team-mates.

The forward trained in the gym and on the pitch at the training centre. He should stay in this stage for at least one week, with progress gradual and subject to his daily response.

There is no confirmed date for his return. In an optimistic scenario, he could be available to coach Juan Pablo Vojvoda at the start of February.

This week brings two fixtures for Santos. On Wednesday they open the Brasileirão away to Chapecoense. On Saturday at 20:30, Brasília time, they face São Paulo at Morumbis in a decisive Campeonato Paulista clássico.

São Paulo are opponents again on four February at 20:00 at Vila Belmiro, in the second round of the Brasileirão. From that second meeting, plans for the forward’s return to matches begin to take shape.
