Neymar is in the final days of his holiday and has kept fit, posting Instagram photos from the gym and a padel court on Tuesday. The forward is due to report back to Santos at CT Rei Pelé on Friday 17, leaving him two days to return.

According to Diario Do Peixe, he is expected to see out his contract with the club until the end of the year, and is said to have told friends he cannot abandon the club and his team-mates at this point.

Neymar featured sparingly at the World Cup, appearing only in the closing minutes of the 3-0 group win over Scotland, then again late in the 2-1 last-16 defeat to Norway, when he scored Brazil’s goal from the penalty spot.

Since that exit he has taken a short break with family, travelling to Orlando to celebrate daughter Mel’s first birthday. He then visited Las Vegas, played in a poker tournament and spent time with his wife Bruna Biancardi and friends.

On returning to the Alvinegro early last year, his main target was the World Cup, and he even suggested it would be his last, sharing “The Last Dance”. After achieving that ambition, doubts over the rest of his season followed amid speculation of offers from abroad, while posts by Neymar Pai and friend Cris Guedes urged him to keep playing.

With Santos battling relegation and facing financial strain, he is expected to return to Brazil with hope of helping to ‘save’ the club in the run-in. He had considered retirement, but online support calling for him to continue and his wife’s pregnancy, with the family settled on the coast, have counted towards staying until December.
