Monday saw Nick Woltemade presented with a special award at the Germany training camp.

The award dates back to his time at Stuttgart, when they won the German Cup.

Nick Woltemade scoring five goals in total in the competition, including one in the final as Stuttgart won 4-2.

However, the award is for what happened after the final whistle.

In the Cup Final, Stuttgart’s opponents were Arminia Bielefeld, an incredible story as the third tier German club reached a cup final. On the way to meeting Stuttgart, they somehow managed to defeat Hannover 96, Union Berlin, Freiburg, Werder Bremen and Bayer Leverkusen.

Newcastle United striker Nick Woltemade presented with the German Football Association’s Fair Play Medal at the Germany training base in Wolfsburg on Monday.

After the final whistle went in that Cup Final, instead of celebrating with his teammate when the final whistle blew, Nick Woltemade went over to the players on the losing team, recognising the third tier team for their remarkable run to the final.

The German FA saying how the now Newcastle United striker “showed maturity and compassion” to his opponents

“Instead of immediately joining the celebrations, he first sought out the Arminia Bielefeld players, gave them high-fives, embraced them, and offered words of encouragement – a sign of true sportsmanship after an exciting final.”

Ronny Zimmermann is the DFB vice president for amateur football and also the Fair Play jury chairman:

“Football lives on emotion, but also on respect, decency and fairness.

“Nick Woltemade, in a moment of triumph, put his teammates and opponents at the centre, not himself. Gestures like these are what distinguish our sport and make it more than just a game.

Nick Woltemade explaining:

“I thought it was the right thing to do.

“I still had plenty of time to celebrate with the fans, my family and my team.

“But I wanted to congratulate each individual [on the other team] personally.”

My thoughts

Nick Woltemade has already made a big impression at Newcastle United with six goals on the pitch BUT also off the pitch as well.

In interviews he has come across really well and presents himself as a very genuine character.

Eddie Howe and many of the players commenting on how the new arrival has fitted in so well and how down to earth he is.
