El Correo reports that Nico Williams will miss the rest of Athletic's La Liga 2025-26 season with a moderate hamstring injury, but will reach the World Cup 'in extremis' after an expected three to four week lay-off.
Williams felt a sharp pain in a sprint for a long ball shortly after the half-hour and asked to be replaced. He left the pitch without limping, later showed a limp heading to the dressing room, and applied ice.
An MRI confirmed damage in his left hamstring and the results were sent to Lezama and the federation. Oihan Sancet has the same diagnosis and timeline, so both will miss Espanyol on Wednesday, Celta on Sunday and Real Madrid at the Bernabéu on 23 or 24 May.
This is the latest setback in a season disrupted by pubis trouble that kept him out for around six weeks for treatment away from the club. On his return he delivered his best display in Vitoria last time out, scoring twice.
Spain open on 15 June against Cape Verde. Luis de la Fuente will name 26 players on 25 May, with changes permitted until 30, and is minded to wait for Williams, who may skip the opener and target 21 June against Saudi Arabia. Other fitness doubts include Lamine Yamal, Rodri, Merino and Víctor Muñoz.
