Nico Serrano at a crossroads as pre-season minutes dry up at Athletic

After loans at Mirandés, PEC Zwolle, Racing Ferrol and Sporting under Ernesto Valverde, Nico Serrano now faces a new test under Edin Terzic following a quiet pre-season. According to as.com, the 23-year-old winger was listed for friendlies against Olympique and Atalanta but did not get on.

He has only 60 minutes this summer, split across Racing and Burgos. A minor rectus anterior issue kept him out of the first three outings under the German coach and has limited his selection. He has had the least game time aside from Vencedor, Gorosabel, Vesga and Agirrezabala, the injured Vivian and Egiluz, and Spain’s World Cup pair Nico Williams and Laporte.

With Nico Williams back, plus Iñaki Williams, Robert Navarro, Berenguer and possibly Djaló ahead of him, the path is crowded. Djaló logged 15 minutes at the Vélodrome and 30 in Bergamo.

The window closes on one September and the Sevilla match is near, which could clarify his outlook. For now there is calm, he remains in the squad with shirt 22, the campaign has only just begun and Terzic still needs to assess his wide options.

Serrano is contracted until June 2028 and is a Spain youth international from Under-16 to Under-19 level. He has long stated he wants to succeed at Athletic. In March he said he wanted at least a full season after his loans, then finished last term with 24 league appearances and two goals.
