Nicolas Dixon relishes Elland Road return as Leeds mural relocated and repainted | OneFootball

Leeds United fan artist Nicolas Dixon is nearing completion of his relocated Elland Road mural, describing painting on the stadium as “as good as it gets”. Recommissioned by the club, he has returned to refresh his tribute to the 1972 FA Cup winners.

As reported by yorkshireevenpost.co.uk, plans for a new West Stand were approved in January and the original wall is being turned into a security hub, so outward kiosk windows required the artwork to be moved and redone.

Now positioned at the north east corner, the piece celebrates the 1972 triumph and features Don Revie, trainer and coach Les Cocker and a host of iconic players.

Dixon first painted the abstract in 2022 after a Leeds United Supporters Trust commission, using portraits by fellow artist Paul Trevillion to mark 50 years since Wembley.

He said he felt privileged to be back and admitted watching his earlier work be painted over was traumatic. He is glad to be doing it again and believes the redevelopment points to exciting times, even if some fans complain about transfers.

Relocation proved trickier than expected. With a kiosk cutting across Don Revie’s head, he reconfigured the players, leant on his graphic designer for help and, after trial and error, now prefers the new layout.

Dixon has hinted at a few surprises and plans to add finishing touches this weekend. The mural is already on view to passers-by, while the next home game is due to be a pre-season friendly against RB Leipzig on August the eighth, and the redevelopment will increase capacity from 37,645 to 53,000.
