Manchester United have so far signed two out of the three midfielders that head coach Michael Carrick had demanded at the start of the summer window.

INEOS were delighted with Andrey Santos’ capture from Chelsea, while the co-owners triggered Youri Tielemans‘ release clause to acquire his signature from Aston Villa.

Carrick still wants that elusive defensive midfielder, with the likes of Carlos Baleba, Manu Kone, and Eduardo Camavinga among the names being monitored.

However, after spending close to £85 million to land the Belgian and Brazilian international, the Red Devils do not have the funds to bring in a marquee name.

United eyeing a low-cost solution to their midfield woes

This is why they are contemplating signing a low-cost alternative instead, with Fulham’s Sander Berge emerging as an option.

Belgian outlet Voetbalkrant have added another name to the list — Nicolas Raskin of Rangers. The 25-year-old starred for Belgium in the World Cup, and naturally, plenty of teams have now entered the race.

Interestingly, Rangers had previously rejected a bid worth around £14 million from newly-promoted side Hull City, and that asking price has skyrocketed.

Hull, Real Betis and Villarreal are unlikely to seal any agreement now that Inter Milan, United, and Aston Villa have placed the Belgian defensive midfielder on their shortlist.

Nicolas Raskin emerges as a surprise target

“Internazionale FC has set its sights on Raskin. The Nerazzurri want to carry out a rejuvenation operation this summer. It is beyond dispute that the Italian champions can offer Raskin very interesting sporting prospects.

“Although we still expect competition from the English side. Clubs such as Aston Villa and Manchester United — who have the ambition to hurt Arsenal FC, Manchester City, and Liverpool FC in the coming seasons — undoubtedly have Raskin on their (long) list.”

Nicolas Raskin will reportedly cost around £25 million, a fee United should have no problem paying if they are genuinely interested.

Playing in Scotland means the former Standard Liège ace is accustomed to the physicality of English football. His ability to blend both silk and steel has been on full display during his impressive performances for the Gers in the Scottish Premiership. But it is likely that he is more of a backup in case other deals go south.
