France’s 0-2 defeat to Spain in the World Cup semi-final on Tuesday night has cost the FFF a significant Nike performance bonus. The federation missed the thresholds tied to reaching the final and winning the tournament.
According to L'Équipe, the current contract provides €one million for making the final and a further €three million for the title. The agreement is worth €50m until the end of this season, then doubles until 2034.
Performance-linked payments have long been part of Nike’s arrangement with the FFF. In 2018, when France won in Russia, the bonus for lifting the trophy was €two million, with €500,000 for simply reaching the final.
By the Qatar edition, those bonuses had already risen to the present levels for winners and finalists at this tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
There is relief of sorts for the FFF. By qualifying for the World Cup, France avoided a €four million malus set out in the contract should they fail to reach the finals, a clause that has not been triggered since the partnership began in 2011.
