Nilson Angulo has been named in Ecuador’s World Cup squad this summer. According to Sunderland Echo, the 22-year-old Sunderland forward will travel to the United States, Mexico and Canada after an eye-catching end to the campaign.
Angulo joined from Anderlecht for around £17.5 million late in January and has been eased into Regis Le Bris’s plans. He made nine appearances, featured in the final three matches and started at Everton and against Chelsea, as Sunderland sealed Europa League qualification.
Earlier in the season head coach Regis Le Bris said he thought Angulo could make a success of his time in England, while stressing it would depend on adaptation. He highlighted the winger’s physicality for the Premier League, noted a tough outing at Bournemouth and praised his positive response. Le Bris also suggested impacts from the bench could come sooner, adding that starting regularly would take time.
Ecuador’s selection also includes Piero Hincapie, Willian Pacho, Pervis Estupinan and Moises Caicedo, with Enner Valencia among the forwards.
