Ramón Rodríguez ‘Monchi’ has set to work at Espanyol, appearing at first-team training and embracing club icon Tommy N’Kono as survival looms on the line. The visit came on the eve of Wednesday’s must-win against Athletic Club, with the team seeking to end an 18-match run without victory.

As reported by as.com, his hiring as general sporting director was confirmed on Monday, followed by a string of meetings, including with the squad and head coach Manolo González. González felt the appointment could bring the stability the club perhaps needed.

After offering brief words of encouragement to supporters upon being named, Monchi watched Tuesday’s session from the RCDE Stadium stands. It was the final workout before Athletic’s visit, and Espanyol need a win to edge closer to safety.

Monchi climbed the steps to greet and hug N’Kono, now the club’s ambassador, long-time goalkeeping coach and a goalkeeping great. Monchi was also a goalkeeper.

Two vast banners framed the scene. One, from the club, read “Fe. Valor. Honor”, part of a campaign for a blue-and-white flag mosaic to sweep the stands on Wednesday. Another, from the youth side, declared “Juntos somos invencibles”.
