No clear strategy? Bayern parts ways with athletic trainer

FC Bayern is set to undergo several changes this summer, some of which have already taken place. Dante, for example, is the new coach of the reserve team, but there will be other changes at the campus as well.

One of them is already a done deal. As reported by the TZ, FC Bayern will part ways with Carsten Schünemann. The 57-year-old has been head of the athletic training department for the youth teams since the summer of 2019. Schünemann had been the subject of internal criticism for quite some time.

The separation has not yet been officially confirmed, but that may happen shortly.

Bayern is restructuring at the campus

Among the allegations against Schünemann is that he allegedly deliberately held back highly qualified coaches in his department. This is an approach with which FC Bayern clearly does not agree.

Furthermore, there is said to have been no clear strategy for managing training loads. This led to some players being subjected to full training loads multiple times in the past without adequate recovery periods, which could ultimately have contributed to an increase in injuries.

That is why action is now being taken. And FC Bayern is already prepared and has plans in place regarding his successor. One internal option would be Quirin Löppert, who moved to Munich from FC Augsburg earlier this year to serve as athletic training coach and rehabilitation coach. Johannes Wieber of 1. FC Nürnberg is also a candidate; he previously worked for the record champions for six years starting in 2013.

In any case, Bayern could make a major shake-up this summer, as the team’s campus doctor, Jan-Philipp Müller, is also on the move. Long rehabilitation periods without any apparent reason repeatedly caused confusion among players and coaches. Many predictions regarding the duration of absences also turned out to be incorrect in the end. Bayern is therefore trying to optimize this area as much as possible.
