Nordic FAs urge EU action over FIFA governance under Infantino | OneFootball

The football associations of Finland, Denmark and Sweden, among the most outspoken in their opposition to Infantino, have asked the European Union to engage over what they describe as governance, transparency and decision making shortcomings at FIFA. EL PERIÓDICO reports that the trio have written to EU commissioner for Intergenerational Equity, Youth, Culture and Sport, Glenn Micallef, seeking a meeting in Brussels.

In the letter, they say recent developments inside FIFA have caused serious concern. The reference is to Infantino’s plan to sell a percentage of the World Cup business to investors led by Ivanka Trump’s brother-in-law.

They argue the project’s withdrawal after international pressure does not remove the need for a broader European debate on the future of global football governance. They add that EU institutions, UEFA and national FAs have distinct roles but a shared interest in protecting a model built on openness, democratic participation, sporting merit and solidarity.

The FAs contend that football cannot demand accountability, transparency and integrity from clubs, leagues and national bodies while accepting lower standards at the top of the game. They say FIFA’s rules should apply equally and its governing bodies must be able to show that decisions are made independently, transparently and in the interests of the game. They add that major decisions should not advance without due involvement of FIFA’s elected bodies and its member associations.

The three federations have asked Micallef for an in person meeting to discuss both the recent FIFA episode and how democratic sports organisations and European policymakers could work together.
