Nordic federations urge Brussels to intervene over FIFA and Gianni Infantino | OneFootball

Denmark, Finland and Sweden have asked the European Commission to intervene over FIFA and its president, Gianni Infantino.

According to L'Équipe, the request was set out in a letter sent on Wednesday to Glenn Micallef, the European commissioner responsible for sport.

Ari Lahti, Jesper Moller and Simon Aström said recent developments at FIFA had raised serious concerns about governance, transparency and decision-making. They highlighted the FIFA Forward Entreprise plan to sell World Cup stakes to private funds, saying it sharpened those worries. The proposal has been withdrawn, but the underlying questions remain.

The letter argued that EU institutions, UEFA and national associations hold different responsibilities, yet share an interest in a model built on openness, democratic participation, sporting merit and solidarity. It pointed to the 2021 attempt to launch the European Super League as proof of what can be achieved when football bodies and EU policymakers act together. The authors said such coordination is still needed.

They asked to meet Micallef in Brussels to discuss the situation. The letter closed with a warning that the soul of football should never again be put up for sale.
