England edged Norway 2-1 after extra time in the World Cup quarter-final on Saturday, Jude Bellingham deciding it as Erling Haaland stayed quiet. L'Équipe rated Bellingham nine and highlighted Elliot Anderson’s composure in midfield. His display combined relentless work with rare tactical intelligence, switching roles as Thomas Tuchel adjusted the shape.
Bellingham threatened on 19. Andreas Schjelderup opened the scoring on 36 with a speculative centre that bounced in off the post, Haaland’s header soon after carried no threat, Sorloth then lifted over on 39 and Jordan Pickford denied Martin Ödegaard on 40. England levelled on 45+2 when Bellingham finished a move sparked by Anderson.
Haaland’s only second-half sight was another tame header on 53, with Pickford equal to it, and the keeper later repelled Antonio Nusa on 85. Schjelderup worked hard after the break before Nusa replaced him on 67, while Oscar Bobb entered on 68 and looked to drive at England.
Nyland had already looked jittery with his feet under pressure from Spence on 90, and on 93 he spilled Anderson’s floating strike for Bellingham to turn in. VAR then cancelled a Bobb-won penalty on 101. Haaland was withdrawn for Jørgen Strand-Larsen on 106, and Nyland saved from Spence and Saka on 109.
England lost Declan Rice at half-time due to a virus, yet the new City man Anderson recovered nine balls and kept control in a shaken midfield. Noni Madueke was also withdrawn at the interval after an erratic half that included two good crosses on 23 and 44 but several offsides, five turnovers and misfired dribbles.
