Norwich City enjoyed a positive summer of spending following a disappointing 2024/25 campaign.

Much excitement swirled around the walls of Carrow Road following the transfer window, after the Canaries made a number of promising additions.

Liam Manning assumed the managerial vacancy left by Johannes Hoff Thorup early in the summer and began recruiting players such as Harry Darling, Pape Diallo and Mathias Kvistgaarden.

Perhaps the Norfolk outfit’s biggest coup was keeping hold of Josh Sargent, who was linked with a move away from Carrow Road all summer.

Bundesliga side Wolfsburg reportedly agreed a deal worth £21 million for his services, but the striker turned that move down, whilst Premier League outfits such as Leeds United and Burnley were also strongly linked with a swoop.

The 25-year-old has netted 36 times in his last 65 second-tier appearances, which explains why there was so much interest in his services this summer. However, Norwich managed to keep hold of their star striker.

Despite this positivity, there are still a number of operators who may not be delighted at the prospect of spending this season with the Canaries.

Football League World’s Norwich City fan pundit, Zeke Downes, has highlighted one player in particular who he thinks could be eyeing up an exit from the club in the January transfer window.

Shane Duffy predicted to pursue Norwich City exit

“Shane Duffy looked as though he was about to leave,” stated Downes. “He was linked with West Brom, and then nothing happened.

“He is well down the pecking order now. He's at least fourth, maybe fifth choice after Ruairi McConville because McConville's at least had some minutes, whereas Duffy's not been included at all.

“So, that's a sign that Manning has no interest in using him at all. I am surprised he's still around because he will want to get game time at this point in his career.

“I don't know why it has not happened yet. Maybe it still will in terms of a free transfer, or he could leave in January.”

Shane Duffy could still operate at the Championship level

Since Manning took over as Norwich City manager, it has become abundantly clear that Duffy isn’t in his plans as a centre-back who will play much football.

The 33-year-old is yet to make an appearance for the Canaries during the opening stages of this season and has been named in the matchday squad on just a single occasion, during a 2-1 victory over Watford in the EFL Cup.

Although no longer in the prime of his career, the Irish defender has proven to be a capable operator at the Championship level.

Last term, Duffy made 45 starts for Norwich City in the second-tier, highlighting that he still has the fitness and talent required to perform consistently.

In fact, he was one of the Norfolk outfit’s best performers during the final stages of the season, even scoring two goals from his final three league appearances to contribute at the other end of the pitch.

If Norwich no longer require his services, a number of Championship clubs would benefit from acquiring a defender of his expertise and experience.
