Chelsea are underway against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, but before much has happened in the game we’re already worried about what’s going on with the team lineup.
Wesley Fofana’s mystery absence has us worried.
The international break was supposed to bring us a lot of players back to fitness, but it hasn’t worked out that way at all. One of the players we were expecting back was Wesley Fofana.
He was concussed when we faced Lincoln on the 23rd of September. That shouldn’t have been a big deal – he missed three games against Brighton, Benfica and Liverpool in the compulsory “concussion protocol” which means players need to miss a minimum of 12 days after picking one up.
Given Fofana’s injury record, it was quite nice in a way to give him an extended break after his latest return to the team. He then had the whole two weeks of the international break to build up his fitness.
There was no mention of a fresh injury from Enzo Maresca in his press conference yesterday. Yet here we are on match day, and there is no Fofana in the squad.
Kieran Gill of the Daily Mail insists that he’s heard Fofana’s injury is “not injury related”, but in a way that’s more worrying. Is it a personal problem? A disciplinary issue? Is his concussion so bad that he can’t play? Whatever the reason, it can’t be good.
We will have to wait for the full time press conference to find out more.
Enzo Maresca promised he would give Josh Acheampong minutes, and he’s done just that today.
Enzo Fernandez does have an injury, picked up on international duty. But it doesn’t sound too serious, and there’s plenty of cover now that Andrey Santos and Romeo Lavia are back.
