Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand was particularly impressed by Leny Yoro, who made quite an impact off the bench against West Ham United.

The Red Devils entered the London Stadium high on confidence, having beaten Man City, Arsenal, Fulham, and most recently, Spurs, in Michael Carrick’s first four games in charge.

But on Tuesday, they found a sturdy foe in East London, one that was happy to close down the spaces and leave the initiative to the visitors.

Following an uneventful first half, the Hammers stunned MUFC by taking the lead through Tomas Soucek, who finished off a slick team play.

Nevertheless, Benjamin Sesko’s introduction proved vital once more, as the Slovenian saved the day by netting a 96th-minute equaliser.

While the striker was rightly hailed for his crucial impact, Ferdinand decided to focus on the exploits of a fellow defender. The retired star was enchanted by Yoro, who also delivered the goods after entering the pitch in the second half.

“Also special shout-out to Leny Yoro! Two massive blocks to stop West Ham from going 2-0 up!” posted the former England international on his X account.

The 20-year-old entered the field in the 68th minute, as Harry Maguire was struggling with a hamstring issue, and he managed to fill in admirably for his experienced teammate, making some timely last-ditch interventions to deny West Ham another goal.

Leny Yoro now challenging for Man Utd starting role?

Yoro has been dropped to the bench since Carrick’s arrival, and there were also concerns over his condition ahead of the London trip. Nevertheless, his performance on Tuesday suggests he should be in the conversation for a starting role, even though Maguire and Lisandro Martinez have been formidable in recent weeks.

The Englishman provided a reassuring update on his condition after the match, but if he doesn’t regain his full fitness for the Everton game, then Yoro will be ready to step up.

Carrick also agreed with Ferdinand’s assessment, as he hailed the youngster for his big impact off the bench.

“Leny’s came on and made a big difference for us tonight in big moments,” said the 44-year-old via Sky Sports.

The Man Utd boss is also expected to welcome Matthijs de Ligt back to the fold in the coming weeks, which should give him further selection headaches, albeit positive ones.
