Nottingham Forest are finalising the sale of striker Taiwo Awoniyi to Coventry City, pending a medical.

According to NY Times, a deal is in place for the 29-year-old to join Coventry. He signed for Forest in 2022 on a five-year contract in a then club-record £17.2million move from Union Berlin.

He struck winners against Liverpool and Arsenal in his debut season, finishing with 10 in 27 league games. He started the next campaign with three in three, then endured two long lay-offs and slipped behind Igor Jesus and Chris Wood.

Last season he made 18 appearances in all competitions and started only three league matches. Even so, he produced a brace and an assist in the 3-1 win at Chelsea in May, and scored in the 3-0 victory over Tottenham that eased relegation fears.

Across the last two seasons he has started only six Premier League games, partly due to injury. He sustained a serious abdominal problem in May 2025 against Leicester, was placed in an induced coma after surgery, returned in October, then scored at Brentford in January.

Coventry return to the top flight in 2026-27 after 25 years and have broken their transfer record three times this summer, most recently for Nordsjaelland midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi. That fee surpassed the £22.5million paid for Brighton goalkeeper Carl Rushworth and around £17m for Eintracht Frankfurt defender Aurele Amenda. A move would offer Awoniyi regular minutes and give Frank Lampard’s side know-how, while Oliver Glasner seeks more attacking options before the window closes.
