Swansea City face a huge injury blow to Cameron Burgess, as FLW names two alternatives they should move for this summer

Spirits are high around Swansea City heading into the new campaign, with the Welsh outfit having enjoyed an excellent summer transfer window so far, but rotten luck just before their Championship opener means they may have to dive into the market again sooner than anticipated.

Indeed, it’s been a brilliant summer window so far for Swansea, with seven signings through the doors, six of them being new. Leo Walta made his loan move from Swedish side Sirius permanent, whilst Joseph Opoku, Elijah Just, Stephen Welsh, Moussa Yeo, Tiago Parente, and Ross Stewart have all signed permanent deals with the club.

However, their centre-back options, even with the addition of Welsh, remain light at best, and following the news of Cameron Burgess’ recent ACL injury, their pursuit for another option or two in that area ought to be ramped up.

Welsh and Ben Cabango are their only recognised senior centre-backs heading into the campaign, and with a move for Valencia’s Andre Almeida not materialising, FLW has named two alternatives they must consider moving for ASAP.

Tyler Bindon

Tyler Bindon started his career in football in his native New Zealand before moving to Los Angeles at an early age with his family, as his mother was also a professional footballer, where he would eventually link up with the academy of LAFC.

The 21-year-old would make the switch to the United Kingdom in the summer of 2023, joining Reading, and quickly establishing himself as a regular under former Southampton and Sheffield United boss Ruben Selles in Berkshire, making 91 appearances for the Royals across two seasons.

He'd agree to join Nottingham Forest in January 2025, but spent the rest of the campaign on loan with Reading in League One, and would promptly be sent out on loan to Sheffield United last season after Selles had taken charge of the Blades.

However, the Spaniard would be dismissed after six games at Bramall Lane, each ending in defeat, leaving the Kiwi out of incoming boss Chris Wilder's plan, at least initially.

The defender would make 26 Championship appearances in South Yorkshire, providing competition for the likes of Ben Godfrey, Mark McGuinness, Japhet Tanganga, Leo Hjelde, and Ben Mee.

Whenever he was given the opportunity to prove his worth, Bindon performed admirably, and now back at Nottingham Forest, a decision regarding his future must be made sooner rather than later, as Swansea should swoop in to strike a deal.

Having already signed one New Zealand international in the form of Elijah Just this summer, the Swans should look to complete a similar trick with the addition of Bindon, who will provide strong competition at the heart of defence in South Wales, capable of breaking his way into the starting XI instantly.

On a loan deal, Bindon poses few risks, as head coach Vitor Matos should look to get this one over the line before the deadline.

Eiran Cashin

Coming through the ranks at Derby County, Eiran Cashin would go on to make 144 appearances for the Rams across spells in League One and the Championship, before joining Brighton and Hove Albion in January 2025 for around £9 million.

However, since his switch to the South Coast, the Irishman has made just two first-team appearances for the Seagulls in all competitions and spent last campaign out on loan in the second tier with Birmingham City and Blackburn Rovers, impressing in the latter.

With the 24-year-old now back at the Amex, he faces more competition than ever to break his way into Fabian Hurzeler's plans, with the likes of Mario Vuskovic, Lewis Dunk, Pascal Struijk, Olivier Boscagli, and Michael Svoboda ahead of him in the pecking order.

Under contract on the South Coast until the summer of 2030, the likeliest route for Cashin is another loan back to the Championship, and Swansea would be an ideal fit for all parties.

The Swans loaned in Malick Yalcouye from the Seagulls last season and helped to develop the youngster, and can help to do the same with Cashin.

Left-footed, like Burgess, Cashin would slot straight into Burgess' place in the side whilst the Aussie recovers from his injury setback, and with ample Championship experience under his belt on a straight loan deal, it seems like a no-brainer move for Matos to pursue.
