Nottingham Forest could yet be busy before the 7pm deadline, with late moves being weighed for a striker, a left-back and a midfielder. Stefan Ortega became the second January arrival from Manchester City on Sunday, the 33-year-old following loan striker Lorenzo Lucca from Napoli.
Inter midfielder Davide Frattesi has been monitored, though reports in Italy suggest he is now likely to stay as Liverpool’s Curtis Jones has not been secured as a replacement. Brighton’s Yasin Ayari has been considered, and a £14 million offer for Celtic’s Arne Engels has reportedly been rejected. “I would want it rebuffed, unless it was £100 million. And then I think the board would step in there,” said Celtic boss Martin O’Neill, speaking to the Daily Record.
At left-back, Napoli’s Mathias Olivera has been linked, but Antonio Conte is said to be reluctant to let him go without reinforcements. Fiorentina’s Robin Gosens was explored, yet Fabrizio Romano said on X that the German wants to stay to help in their relegation fight.
Forest have already added Lucca up front, but another forward remains on the wishlist. Moves for Jean-Philippe Mateta and Jorgen Strand Larsen have turned into non-starters, with Olympiacos’s Mehdi Taremi among names previously considered.
Sean Dyche urged patience, saying the squad is in good shape. He noted the noise around a striker, highlighted Taiwo Awoniyi’s goal against Brentford, and pointed to Lucca’s arrival.
Dyche added that left-back and midfield could be areas to bolster, with many games ahead. He said Forest are linked with loads of players and there are two or three he knows of, though that does not guarantee deals. He does not expect key departures, calling exits highly unlikely unless the club choose otherwise.
