Armstrong has made 24 appearances for Everton and played 87 minutes in Saturday’s draw at Bournemouth before being replaced by Charly Alcaraz. Supporters sang his name throughout and warned there would be unrest if he was sold.

After the game, manager David Moyes said he understood the frustration and that supporters are not always wrong, though powerful figures at clubs sometimes make tough decisions. He noted managers must make calls on players, yet there can be bigger choices for the club, which he trusted to do what it believes is right.

Moyes added that, if speaking directly to those fans, he would remind them their manager is an Evertonian.
