Nürnberg dominated the play in the first-half, but there were few chances at either end. Arminia Bielefeld demonstrated that their confidence is back after pushing Union Berlin to extra-time in the cup and beating Karlsruhe 4-0.
However, Mael Corboz conceded a penalty-kick two minutes after the restart. Rafael Lubach scored with aplomb to put the in-form host in front. Before the hour mark, Nürnberg’s lead was doubled as Finn Becker scored his third goal of the season.
The former Hoffenheim player made the biggest impact in Nürnberg’s electric start to the half as he won the penalty-kick for the first goal. In snowy conditions, Bielefeld struggled to even show signs of improvement for the rest of the game.
Their goalkeeper Jonas Kersken created one of the best moments of the matchday when he chased Nürnberg’s substitute Adriano Grimaldi. Nürnberg’s decision to extend Miroslav Klose’s contract worked wonders as they continued their rise.
They have now leapfrogged their opponents to sit in ninth place. After a game against Magdeburg, they will host Greuther Fürth in the Bavarian derby. Bielefeld will be at home on matchday 14 against Preußen Münster.
