FC Barcelona have officially confirmed that club captain Frenkie de Jong has suffered a significant knee injury, dealing Hansi Flick a major setback ahead of the new campaign.
The club announced on Wednesday that medical tests have revealed a tear to the medial collateral ligament in De Jong’s right knee. Barcelona added that the midfielder will continue under medical treatment and close observation, with his recovery depending on how the injury progresses over the coming weeks.
While the club deliberately avoided providing a recovery timeline, the statement confirms fears that had been growing since De Jong returned from the World Cup with persistent knee problems.
The injury leaves Flick without one of his most important midfielders just weeks before the start of the new La Liga season.
De Jong had established himself as a key figure under the German coach, offering control in possession, defensive stability and leadership in the centre of the pitch. His absence will inevitably force Barcelona to adjust their plans during pre-season and the opening months of the campaign.
Fortunately for Flick, Barcelona still possess considerable depth in midfield. Pedri, Gavi, Marc Bernal, Dani Olmo and Fermin Lopez are all expected to take on greater responsibility while De Jong recovers, with youngsters also likely to receive additional opportunities during pre-season.
The timing is especially disappointing for De Jong after an exhausting 2026 World Cup campaign with the Netherlands, where he continued playing despite discomfort before eventually returning to Barcelona for further medical assessment.
Barcelona have not confirmed whether surgery will be required, instead opting for a conservative update that leaves open multiple treatment options depending on how the ligament responds over the coming weeks.
For now, the focus shifts entirely to ensuring the Dutch international makes a full recovery rather than rushing him back into action.
