As expected, FC Barcelona have officially announced that new signing Joan Garcia will undergo arthroscopic surgery after suffering a meniscus injury.

The 24-year-old shot-stopper is now expected to be out of action for a period of four to six weeks.

“The player Joan Garcia suffers a tear of the internal meniscus in his left knee. Tomorrow, he will undergo arthroscopy surgery performed by Dr. Joan Carles Monllau,” the club statement read.

“The approximate time out is 4 to 6 weeks, depending on his progress.”

Since arriving in the summer, Garcia has become a key player for Barcelona, starting all seven matches in all competitions and largely impressing, barring the mistake he made vs Real Oviedo on Thursday.

As such, the injury comes as a bitter blow. Instead of opting for conservative treatment like they did with Gavi before he had to undergo surgery, Barcelona have decided to go with the arthroscopic route right away with Garcia.

Initially, it was claimed that the Spaniard had sustained the injury in training earlier today. However, latest reports suggest that it happened late in last night’s game vs Oviedo.

The goalkeeper will be out for a period of four to six weeks, meaning his return will likely take place in November.

This would mean that Garcia will miss the matches against Real Sociedad, PSG, Sevilla, Girona, Olympiacos, and Real Madrid.

Barcelona play Elche, Club Brugge, and Celta Vigo in early November before the international break. It remains to be seen if Garcia makes it back for any of those games or whether his return is delayed for the clash vs Athletic Club on the weekend of 23 November.
