Bayer Leverkusen have announced the signing of Germany international Jonas Hofmann from Borussia Mönchengladbach for €10m.
A transfer that has garnered very little speculation, it has progressed significantly quickly in the past 24 hours. However, after exercising a clause in Hofmann’s contract, Die Werkself have managed to lure the 30-year-old to the BayArena on a four-year deal until the summer of 2027.
“We have been dealing with Jonas for a long time and are glad that he has decided to join Bayer 04,” commented Leverkusen’s sporting director Simon Rolfes before adding: “He’s the type of player we were looking for in our squad.”
Last season Hofmann featured 33 times for the Foals where he scored 14 goals and recorded 12 assists predominantly from the right wing. He would also participate in the 2022 World Cup with Germany, however, Hofmann’s game time would be limited to just 28 minutes over the three group games.
Speaking of the transfer, Hofmann stated: “I’m very grateful to Borussia for the past seven years. I had an outstanding time there. Recently, however, I had the feeling that I wanted to do something new. Bayer 04 fits in with these thoughts, the club has been one of the top German clubs for years and is always ambitious internationally. The team is exciting and has an unbelievable amount of quality. I’m really excited for this next chapter.”
For Leverkusen, Hofmann will as depth and experience to Xabi Alonso’s side. While depending on the future of Moussa Diaby, his arrival could force the Frenchman over to the left-hand side. Nevertheless, as for Gladbach, this will be another huge blow, as his loss will be partnered with the departure of Marcus Thuram, Ramy Bensebaini and captain Lars Stindl.
