Bayer Leverkusen have today confirmed the departure of attacking midfielder Paulinho. The Brazilian has secured a loan move to Brazilian side Clube Atlético Mineiro until the end of the season. The 22-year-old’s current contract at B04 only runs until June 2023 meaning he will not have to return back to Germany.
Paulinho moved to Leverkusen in 2018 as a 17-year-old prospect from Vasco da Gama for a fee of around €18.5m. However, it never really worked out for either the player or the club. In the summer of 2020, Paulinho tore his cruciate ligament and spent a long out away from the team. Due to such injuries, the Brazilian only played 79 competitive matches for B04. So far this season, Paulinho has only been in the starting 11 once and featured in 7 Bundesliga games.
In regards to the move, Leverkusen’s sporting director Simon Rolfes said: “Both sides certainly imagined their cooperation differently over the past few years. With this transfer for the rest of the current season, we have now found a satisfactory solution for everyone involved.”
