It is now official: Lea Schüller will leave FC Bayern and continue her career in England. The 28-year-old striker will join Manchester United from the Women’s Super League, ending her five-and-a-half-year spell in Munich.

Schüller joined FC Bayern from SGS Essen in the summer of 2020 and developed into a formative figure in the team. She scored 103 goals in 181 appearances across all competitions and won a total of four German championships with the Munich team. Last season, she also won the double of championship and DFB Cup. She also set standards individually: Schüller was voted Germany’s female footballer of the year in 2022.

Saying goodbye is anything but easy for the international: „Munich has really become my home. The team and the club have always been like a second family to me, regardless of the season. I’ve developed such close friendships here that will last forever,“ explained Schüller in a statement from FC Bayern.

She continued: „It is therefore particularly difficult to take the step now and leave my home, my friends and my family. I am very grateful for the wonderful time in Munich and also for the fact that I was able to experience at FC Bayern how women’s soccer has developed in Munich and in Germany in recent years, what great things have been created here. And I personally was also able to develop enormously during this time, for which I am very grateful.“

Farewell to Schüller with emotional moments

After the last competitive match before Christmas in Leverkusen, there were already signs that Schüller’s time at FC Bayern was coming to an end. After the final whistle, she did a lap of honour, sought contact with the fans and was visibly struggling with tears. Now it is clear that this moment was a farewell.

The truth is, however, that there are also sporting reasons for the move. Schüller had lost her regular place at FC Bayern and in the German national team in recent months. The move to Manchester United, currently fourth in the Women’s Super League, should open up new prospects for her and give her career new impetus.

„My years at Bayern will always be something very special for me and have made a huge impression on me. I will miss you incredibly and remember you fondly – and that will never change,“ said Schüller on her departure.
