Union Berlin have announced that they have completed the signing of Leeds United attacking midfielder Brenden Aaronson on a season-long loan.
On his move to the Bundesliga, Aaronson said: “Union’s path and the success of the last few years did not go unnoticed in either the USA, Austria or England. Somehow, you always heard something about them. A year ago, I wouldn’t have believed that I would be here and able to play in the Champions League with Union. I’m looking forward to the year ahead with joy and confidence and want to help us have another successful season.”
Union Berlin’s managing director Oliver Ruhnert comented on the USA international’s acquistion: “Brenden’s commitment has made us very happy, he is a type of player we don’t have who will be good for our attacking game. Despite his young age, he already has a lot of international experience and will complement our squad at a high level.”
Aaronson only spent one season in the Premier League having joined Leeds last summer from Red Bull Salzburg for €32.84m, the 22 year old struggled in his sole season in England as Leeds were relegated to the Championship.
With his move to the Bundesliga, Brenden joins his brother Paxten Aaronson who joined Eintracht Frankfurt in January from Philadelphia Union in the MLS.
This is Union’s third signing of the summer as Aaronson joins Alex Kral and Mikkal Kaufmann in Köpenick as Union prepare for their first ever season in the Champions League. The signing of Aaronson may indicate a change in formation this season for Union as the 22 year old usually plays as as an attacking midfielder or a winger, neither are positions currently used at Union.
