Chelsea have confirmed the appointment of Xabi Alonso as their new manager, ending two weeks of intense rumours that gathered speed in the last couple of days.

After closing the gap on previous favourite for the job Andoni Iraola, Alonso’s deal has been wrapped up far faster than most expected. He officially starts work on the 1st of July.

We never thought this would be possible – it never felt like an in-demand manager like Alonso would be willing to work within Chelsea’s setup. But clearly he doesn’t have as much bargaining power as we thought – or perhaps the club have been willing to slacken their demands a little after recent failures.

Alonso’s stock certainly fell after his sacking in Madrid at the turn of the year, but he’s still without doubt one of the most promising young managers around, and his spell at Bayer Leverkusen before that was unbelievably impressive.
