Christian Gamboa has extended his contract at Bochum for a further year until June 2025.
The former Costa Rica international defender signed for Bochum in 2019 from Scottish Premiership side Celtic and has since made 112 competitive appearances for the club, including 47 in the Bundesliga.
Gamboa played at the 2014 World Cup for Costa Rica and impressed in Brazil, earning him a transfer to English Premier League side West Bromwich Albion but was unable to gain regular game time during his two seasons there. He then made his move to Celtic where he won eight trophies including the Scottish Premiership three times during his four seasons there before making his move over to Germany.
He then earned promotion to the Bundesliga with Bochum in the 2020/21 season and has helped his side remain in the top flight ever since.
The 34-year-old has featured in the last four games in a row for Bochum this season. “Cristian Gamboa is an important element of our squad, he’s someone who always leads the way,” said Marc Lettau, sporting director of Bochum. “Our younger players can take their cue from him, also in terms of their use in training, because he only knows full throttle on the pitch.”
Gamboa also spoke on his new contract: “I’m very happy that VfL have made me a new offer.
“The club has grown close to my heart, the team, the fans, the stadium, the employees, the city of Bochum. Together, we want to and will manage to celebrate staying in the league again at the end of the season. I’m going to give everything for that, the team will do everything for that.”
