FC Bayern has made it official: a former star of the record champions is returning to the Isar.
FC Bayern is reorganizing its sporting management in the youth sector. The club has officially announced that Michael Wiesinger will take over the position of Sporting Director at the FC Bayern Campus from 1 May. The 53-year-old is moving from the academy of 1. FC Nürnberg to Munich to take over from Markus Weinzierl, whose contract runs until the summer. Talks about his future are still to be held.
With the appointment of Wiesinger, the German record champions are responding to the growing importance of their own young talent. In recent months, the focus has increasingly shifted to the campus, partly because more and more young players are making the leap into the professional squad and receiving playing time there. This development brings with it new demands on sporting management and long-term planning in the youth sector.
Jochen Sauer, Director of Youth Development at FC Bayern, emphasised the strategic importance of the personnel decision: „The campus is becoming more and more of a focus at FC Bayern. This is shown by the current playing time of our young talents with the professionals, above all Lennart Karl. This also increases the tasks for us on a day-to-day basis. We are successfully planning the steps into professional soccer for more and more players. In order to meet these requirements, we have gained an experienced youth manager in Michael Wiesinger. Michael has done a successful job in Nuremberg over many years and we are convinced that with him we will be even better positioned for the challenges of the future than we are now.“
Wiesinger brings with him extensive experience from the youth and professional sectors. Since the 2019/20 season, he has been head of the youth department at 1. FC Nuremberg, where he shaped the sporting direction of the talent factory for several years. Now the next step in his career follows – at a club he already knows from his active time.
„I had a wonderful time as head of youth development in Nuremberg. Now I’m really looking forward to the exciting task of being responsible for talent development at one of the biggest clubs in the world in the future,“ explained Wiesinger on his move to Munich.

Born in Burghausen, Wiesinger can also look back on an eventful professional career. Between 1999 and 2001, Wiesinger himself wore the FC Bayern jersey for two years. After the end of his active career, he gained experience as a coach at several clubs, including 1. FC Nürnberg, FC Ingolstadt and SV Elversberg. This mixture of practical experience, youth development expertise and club knowledge made him the ideal choice for the new role from the point of view of the Bayern management.
In future, Wiesinger will assume responsibility for sporting matters at the FC Bayern Campus under Jochen Sauer. The aim is to further strengthen the links between youth work and the professional sector and to prepare talented players even more specifically for the highest level of performance. In view of the club’s strategic direction, the personnel decision is a clear signal that the path it has embarked upon will be continued consistently.
