Alemany, for his part, boasts vast experience of ongoings behind the scenes in Spanish football.

The 62-year-old previously spent time on the books of all of RCD Mallorca, Valencia and, most notably, the aforementioned Barcelona.

Alemany filled the role of sporting director at the Camp Nou between 2021 and 2023.

He had since spent a prolonged period away from the game, but as alluded to above, early this week, Alemany’s La Liga return has been confirmed.

As per a statement across the website and social media platforms of Atlético Madrid:

‘Mateu Alemany joins Atlético de Madrid as the new Director of Men’s Professional Football. The Balearic-born executive will be part of Carlos Bucero’s team, General Director of Football, leading all matters related to the men’s first team and Atlético Madrileño, as well as the professional area of the Academy.’
