Lazio have belatedly announced Gennaro Gattuso as their new manager, after parting ways with Maurizio Sarri.
The Biancocelesti endured one of their toughest campaigns in recent memory, while Sarri and club president Claudio Lotito constantly clashed in the media. Therefore, the Tuscan tactician’s departure was inevitable. The two parties decided to terminate their contract, paving the way for Sarri’s appointment at Atalanta.
On the other hand, the Italian capital club reached an agreement with Gattuso, who arrived at Formello several weeks ago, and began planning for the next campaign alongside Lotito and sporting director Angelo Fabiani. So while the appointment took place almost a month ago, the official Lazio website finally confirmed it on Tuesday.
SS Lazio SpA announces that it has appointed Mr. Gennaro Gattuso as Head Coach of the First Team. The Club warmly welcomes its new manager and is confident that his experience, professionalism, and determination will contribute to achieving the Club’s sporting objectives.
While the official note didn’t disclose any further details, Gattuso has likely signed a one-year contract with an option for a second. He is expected to earn a yearly salary of €1.5 million.
Despite his limited technical skills, the combative midfielder had a very successful playing career, highlighted by two Champions League triumphs at AC Milan and the 2006 World Cup with the Italian national team.
On the other hand, the Calabrian’s managerial career has witnessed more lows than highs. He has thus far coached a host of clubs in Italy and Europe, most famously Milan, Napoli, Valencia, and Olympique Marseille. His only trophy remains the Coppa Italia, which he won with the Partenopei when football restarted after the Covid-19 pandemic in June 2020.
Gattuso’s most recent experience was with the Italian national team, when he failed to lead the Azzurri to the World Cup after falling short against Bosnia in the playoffs. Therefore, the 48-year-old will be keen to bounce back, but he certainly won’t find it easy at Lazio amid the club’s stern financial struggles.
