Le Mans FC have been officially promoted to Ligue 1 by the LFP’s Disciplinary Committee this Wednesday, the club has confirmed. Le Mans’ promotion was put on hold on Friday as their final Ligue 2 game at Ligue 3-bound SC Bastia has been abandoned with the visitors racing to a 2-0 lead deep in injury time. This result would have secured them second place behind champions Troyes.
However, Bastia fans threw flares and smoke bombs on the pitch, forcing referee Ruddy Buquet to put the game to a halt. This Wednesday, Le Mans’ away win has been confirmed. Le Mans FC are back in the big time.
for the first time since 2010. The promoted Ligue 2 side has defied the odds in securing another promotion. Le Mans have had a stellar season in Ligue 2. They only lost four times this season in the league. Even Ligue 2 champions Troyes could not boast such a record.
Le Mans have been purchased by Outfield; a Brazilian fund which also boasts start athletes likes Novak Djokovic, Felipe Massa and Kevin Magnussen as shareholders. Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has also invested in Le Mans FC through NxtPlay, his investment consortium. Thirteen years after going through liquidation, Le Mans are going back in French football’s first-tier.
